Gary by whom the appointment was considered and I know a Copy of his reply, from which, you will learn that no precautions were taken to secure the Services of a duly qualified person were neglected and that in his selection of Mr Selly, Lieut. Genl. Gary had every reason to believe him to be possessed of the qualifications requisite for the efficient discharge of the duties
of the Office he was about to fill.
I take this opportunity of conveying to you my approval of the arrangements you have made consequent on Selly's retirement, as reported in your despatch No 155, by which Mr Hydeman will act as Chief Clerk on £500 - and Mr Cornwallis as second Clerk on £250.
